Industry-led project, which focusses on delivering sustainable innovation within the entire fashion and textile supply chain.
From 2020 to 2022, Cloudwool participated in the Business of Fashion, Textiles, and Technology (BFTT) programme, part of the £80 million UK Creative Industries Clusters Programme funded by UKRI. Through this initiative, Cloudwool received a share of £1.2 million for their project ‘Re-patri8.’ Cloudwool’s project focused on developing fully traceable and regional supply chains, which take abundant and undervalued British wool fibres and scope out manufacturing capabilities in the UK, balancing affordability with functionality and environmental impact to create a viable range of British wool regionally manufactured textiles accessible to mid, mass market, and luxury fashion and interior companies. Led by Stephanie Rolph (UAL) with company leads Martin Brambley and Yolanda Leask, and supported by academic mentor Prof. Veronika Kapsali (UAL), the team enhanced material performance through partnerships with technology providers and built traceable supply chains within the UK. Through the 1.5-year project, all the key KPIs were met, including collaborating on the development of a shoe material that was later procured for use within their company—British shoemaker Grenson—producing a shoe made from Cloudwool, launched in Spring 2023, and a range of new materials that utilise natural undyed sheep’s fleece in the ‘Pure Cloudwool Collection,’ which is available to order now.
